PHOTOgraphic

In June of 2007 I took one of my best photos when visiting Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. I have often considered getting it blown up and framed. It was a perfect foggy morning and, well it is just one of those great shots! The boats were lined up beautifully, no shadows and vibrant colours. The photos just said to me - this is where the fisherman leaves his boats after a long day at sea. I could smell the fish in this photo. I love it!

Here is is. I actually cropped this one down - and you will see why in a minute. You might remember the one I scrapbooked and hung at JSI for a while. I have reduced the quality for the blog, but the original is a real keeper.

Today Allison and I were running around doing a little Christmas shopping and we decided to check out the new Indigo Book store. I thought I should pick up a photograpic magazine for my stocking (shhh, Santa still comes to our house) and for my firefighter/photographer son, Mark.
My jaw dropped when I saw this..... now take a look at that picture of mine up above one more time.

Of course I bought it and made a bee line home to compare the shot with my own? I mean - was this guy there the same day as me? or .... what????

Well, if it weren't for the little white boat next to the red one....well I would swear.....

This photographer must have been there a few hours after me when the fog was lifting a little. Either that or those three boats always park in the same place every day, which I have heard fishermen do.

So there you go... a brief moment of excitement ...but no, it is not mine...maybe one day. :)

In the meantime I am going to dream of my next camera upgrade (Olympus E3 or E30??) and keep taking photographs.

Julie,
Your photo is superb, but I think I'm going to check my photos taken from the same spot - albeit on a sunny day in the summer of 2004. I could swear the red boat is there in mine too! Those photos always bring back memories of one of those "married moments" when we only had about 10 minutes to stop, have our picture taken and take off. Husband locked keys in car at 4 p.m. of a long weekend and we had to wait 1.5 hours for CAA to arrive from Halifax. God always has other plans for us, n'est-ce pas? I got some of the best photos of our six-week holiday in that time. Forgave husband ... eventually!
Keep up the great blog.

Great picture - and there is nothing wrong with giving stuff away for free. We don't have to make money on everything because that gets tiring and things get out of focus :)It is kinda weird how close those pictures are! lol

Thanks Bamm-ella - yes we can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps. (Prov 16:9)
I am glad you forgave your husband. (smile)

Hey Steve , indeed there is nothing wrong with giving stuff away for free. Actually it is a real blessing!
But when something that belongs to another is used for gain without permission and claims ownership it is different. Think of it as the copyright of all those songs we sing on Sunday. Which is a whole other issue we won't get into. (smile)

After spending thousands of dollars on photographic equipment and training, photographers (like musicians and authors)get kinda possessive about the ownership of their work. If a magazine thought my photo would sell more of their magazines, I would be happy to sell it to them with due recognition. I am sure Michael W. Smith makes sure his name is on all the songs he writes. :)

But, it wasn't my photo. (ego deflated here)
It was sure fun to see the resemblance though.

Thanks for visiting the site.
BTW - Princess Bride is one of my all time fav movies too. :)

Wow, that is crazy, yet hey that could have been yours as well! If that shot was good enough for the cover, yours would have been too!!!!!

What camera are you using now? I'm going to be upgrading to the new Canon 5D Mark II as soon as I make my way into Calgary!!!!! I'm so excited!

The other thing I noticed is the middle boat on your shot is backwards and the boat on the magazine is facing forwards. Crazy first look, though! That was one of my favorite pictures of yours Julie. Always made me want to slow down and reflect on our busy life.

Hey Kris, Thanks a bundle. I am using an Olympus E-500 which is their entry level DSLR. I have my eye on the E3 which is their professional model with all the bells and whistles but weighs a ton! Still deliberating.

hey Laura - I finally saw that too. But it took me a while - third look??? Good eye gal!

I have always loved that photo that you took and so when we were in Nova Scotia for a family wedding I made sure that we got to Peggy's Cove for an afternoon and I took soooooo many pics that day. I admit I was trying to capture the same emotion that your photo had brought. I have a similar pic that I took and it took me forever to compose it and several tries. My poor hubby gave up and went and sat by a small restaurant and had an ice cream cone!!!! That must have been athrill (albeit a short one!) to see "your pic" on that magazine, as well as a " oh man, they stole my photo" feeling, until you actually compared them. I have taken so many pics with my new camera, I wish I had had it then, it takes spectacular pics. My little granddaughter is getting so that she poses for me already when she sees me coming with it!! It's so cute. I must admit it is alittle on the heavy side to cart along so I do use my point and shoot still. But I have become so much more aware of what I am doing now.

oh Cheryl - you have the same inexplicable passion for photography that I do. I cannot explain it...but oh to just take pictures all day long; to travel and capture moments in time;colors, textures, emotions, ideas, thoughts.
How I wish I had discovered this 30 years ago...but I guess I was too preoccupied with life.
What a blessing to be able to stand back now and see a whole new side to life and try to capture it's beauty, it's intrigue and even some of it's hardships on a little digital chip that we might ponder it all anew, preserve it and share it.
